The British Educational Research Association (BERA)

Annual Conferences were managed by BERA's Conference Committee (their first effort being in Leeds for 2001).In the light of experience, they made some changes to the design of the Call for Papers and to the procedures for submitting proposals. Please read the following information carefully and do not assume that all will be the same as usual - it won't be.

Part of a general BERA strategy of giving greater support and encouragement to Special Interest Groups (SIGs) such as SIGOMA, they seeked to involve the SIG conveners more closely in the planning of their conferences. For the participant this should have at least one, and possibly, two effects. The first, they hoped, is that we they be able to increase further the coherence of the programme.

BERA maintained a long-standing policy of encouraging a wide range of submissions for their Annual Conference. This made for a wonderfully diverse set of papers, but also for a programmers' nightmare. The comments they received regularly suggested that the efforts they put into grouping individual papers paid off. However, if you are submitted a proposal for an individual presentation, you should indicate if you believed that this submission has a relevance to one of BERA's SIGs.

If you thought that it does, (and this is the second possible effect) then BERA tried to involve the SIG in helping to determine where your paper best fits. BERA always did their best to programme it away from other sessions that also cover the same SIG's interests. Submissions for collective presentations were handled in the same way as usual.

They also sought to offer more information than is usual at every stage in the proceedings, including an outline programme and definitions of the various types of proposals that could be submitted. They encouraged strongly web-based submissions and are tried to use the available technology to ensure that the basic structure of a proposal can be checked automatically before it was sent in. As a special bonus to you, they extended the period before the submission deadline. However, they always enforced the deadline, and the rules concerning the need for presenters to register with the conference, most strictly.

Enough of the history lesson. BERA members always had a range and highest quality of work.
